In 2005, Tracy Hawkins visited Tanzania to assist with pottery techniques.  During this time, she was fortunate to meet Mesiaki Kimirei and Elias Nnko.  They were united in their desire to improve the water situation in Arusha and decided to work together. Mesiaki Kimirei found the land and a building for a pottery factory. Their first project was called the Sing’isi Pottery Project.

In 2007, Mesiaki received training on the ceramic water filtration manufacturing process, and in early 2008,a ceramic water filter factory was established. The name of the project was changed to Safe Water Ceramics of East Africa.  Safe Water Ceramics of East Africa (SWCEA) is a non-governmental organization that produces ceramic water filters for clean and safe water. This organization is based in Arusha, Tanzania and distributes filters in Tanzania and other African countries.  SWCEA employs local people in their factory.  SWCEA’s mission is to reduce the rate of death and illness caused by drinking unclean and unsafe water and to provide affordable filters. Today, SAFE Water Now supports SWCEA to ensure provision of clean and safe water.
